BIM - is it good or bad?
In early June, the VIII International BIM Forum was held in Moscow, and we visited it and talked to the canada email list participants — watch the report . Together with you, we chose the best report in the main hall, and according to the voting results, the winner was Sergey Dragomirov with his report “What awaits construction in 2024?”. And at the exit from the main hall, there was our small stand, where you could take part in the survey. We asked burning questions. A total of 99 respondents took part in the survey, oh, we were just one short of 100. Did you take part in the survey?

In this article, we will share the results and invite you to discuss them with us together, so that we can ultimately draw correct and useful conclusions for everyone.

BIM adoption rate
In the first two questions, we tried to understand the level of sophistication of the respondents. It turned out to be quite high. Although this is not surprising - the BIM forum has long been gathering the most experienced and talented specialists in the industry. Almost half of the respondents confidently stated their complete immersion in BIM, and a third of them admitted that they are implementing BIM technologies in their companies right now. At the same time, 40% of all survey participants had successful experience of implementing the technology in the past.

Where and how effectively is BIM used?
In various professional communities, podcasts, blog comments, etc., the question is constantly discussed: at what stages of a project are BIM technologies most effective? And at what stages are they most in use? We asked visitors to the BIM forum about this and got the following results:

Surprisingly, BIM has already become a reality. About 85% of respondents use BIM technologies at the design stage, and 40% at the construction stage
Already slightly fewer, approximately a third of respondents, use BIM at the stage of project preparation, surveys and construction supervision
Many speakers at industry events talk about the benefits of information models at the operational stage. However, this practice is still not widespread - only 10% of respondents admitted to using BIM models during the operation of a building

What BIM models tell us
Then we decided to approach the BIM assessment a little unconventionally: we suggested respondents to use a teleport and "move" to the main object of their work - to the model. And to declare to the whole world to all their colleagues what they need to pay attention to when working with the model.

As statistics show, there are still many collisions in the information models being developed right now. However, there are already several tools on the market that help in detecting and eliminating collisions. Therefore, the problem with collisions is definitely solvable.

Another common “complaint” is the limited use of information models at different stages of a construction project. According to a third of respondents, models are actively used only by designers. This is indirectly confirmed by previous statistics on the use of BIM at the stages of the project life cycle. How to solve this problem? Raise awareness of construction industry participants about BIM technologies at all stages of the project, inspire them by your example, showing that learning complex tools and technologies is real.

Where to get knowledge about BIM
Since we actively promote BIM to the masses, participate in professional events and exhibitions, conduct webinars together with software developers, film interviews and podcasts , write analytical articles and reviews on software, etc., we are very interested to know where specialists get their professional knowledge.

The survey results were a pleasant surprise: for 78% of respondents, the main source of knowledge about BIM are industry webinars, conferences, seminars, etc. The second most popular are professional chats, followed by Telegram communities, YouTube channels, and training programs. Quite a significant number of respondents — 38% — learn new information on thematic sites, and slightly less — 34% — from colleagues. The least popular sources of knowledge were magazines and paper books, which, however, is not surprising in the days of rapid development of digital technologies.
