InkScape is a competitor to Adobe Illustrator and other similar vector drawing programs. It is not yet at the level of Illustrator, but it is much cheaper - $0, and the learning curve is much less steep. InkScape can create SVG graphics that are compatible with browsers, including animation. SVG animation can be used for training, special effects, games, and japan number data simply to make images on websites more impressive (small footprint and almost infinite scalability). An oft-cited example of what can be done with SVG animation and interactivity is the MCDU emulator project .

It demonstrates that complex systems can be built simply with SVG, and do not require plugins or special players. Inkscape still lags behind Illustrator, but the gap is closing as the Inkscape developer community continues to expand. Perhaps one day Inkscape will even take the lead, especially since it is so easy to get started and costs nothing.
