In 46 BC, Julius Caesar built a temporary stadium for athletes on the Campus Martius. In 85, during the reign of Domitian, the stadium was expanded and turned into a large-scale structure. It was 275 meters long and 106 meters wide, and could accommodate up to 15,000 spectators at a time. Domitian's stadium was decorated with works by ancient masters and artists, and numerous sports games and competitions were held there.
